Adapalene is a topical retinoid available over the counter in some countries (including the US and Canada) and pharmacy-only or prescription elsewhere.

How it works

It normalises skin cell turnover inside pores, which may help with whiteheads, blackheads and ongoing breakouts over several weeks.

Typical strengths: 0.1% gel is standard OTC in the US. Some markets also offer 0.3% under professional supply.
