Adapalene
A topical retinoid for clogged pores. OTC in the US and Canada; pharmacy or prescription elsewhere.

Azelaic acid
A dicarboxylic acid for pimples, redness and the look of post-acne marks. Often chosen for sensitive skin.

Benzoyl peroxide
A topical antibacterial for inflammatory pimples and mild acne. Found in washes, gels and spot treatments at 2.5β10%.

Hydrocolloid
The gel material in pimple patches that covers surfaced spots and absorbs fluid.

Niacinamide
Vitamin B3 used in serums and moisturisers to support the barrier and pair with stronger acne actives.

Retinoids
Vitamin A derivatives that increase cell turnover. Used for whiteheads, blackheads and acne maintenance.

Salicylic acid
An oil-soluble BHA used for clogged pores, blackheads and congestion in acne-prone skin.

SPF (sunscreen)
Daily sun protection, especially important with retinoids, acids and mark treatments.

Sulfur
A keratolytic ingredient in masks and spot treatments. Sometimes discussed for fungal folliculitis.
