Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most recognised over-the-counter actives for inflammatory pimples and mild acne. You will see it in washes, gels and spot treatments at strengths from about 2.5% to 10%.

How it works

It works mainly by reducing acne-causing bacteria on the skin and helping to clear blocked pores. Many people use it for red, inflamed pimples rather than deep cysts alone.

Typical strengths: Common OTC strengths are 2.5%, 5% and 10%. Higher is not always better for irritation.

How people use it

  • As a short-contact wash on the face or body (often 2.5–10%)
  • As a leave-on gel or cream on affected areas (commonly 2.5–5%)
  • As a targeted spot gel on individual pimples
  • Introduced slowly (every other day at first) to limit dryness

  • Use daily SPF if you combine with other actives in the morning
