Ingredient

Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also called vitamin B3, is a well-tolerated ingredient often used in serums and moisturisers for acne-prone and blemish-prone skin.

Also known as: Vitamin B3, Nicotinamide

INCI: Niacinamide

How it works

It supports the skin barrier and is often used alongside stronger acne actives. Some people find it helps with oiliness and the look of pores, but results vary.

Typical strengths: 2โ€“10% is typical in consumer products. Higher is not always necessary.

How people use it

  • In serums at roughly 2โ€“10%, often around 10% in budget lines
  • Morning or evening before moisturiser
  • Layered under benzoyl peroxide, acids or retinoids when tolerated
  • As a gentler step when stronger actives irritate

Who it may suit

May suit

  • Acne-prone skin that needs a gentle supporting step
  • Routines that combine several actives
  • People focusing on blemishes and barrier support

May want something else if

  • As a sole treatment for moderate to severe inflammatory acne
  • Very high concentrations if your skin flushes easily (individual)

What to watch for

  • Generally well tolerated, but patch test if you are sensitive
  • Not a substitute for proven antibacterial or retinoid care when needed

Often paired with salicylic acid or azelaic acid rather than compared as a direct swap.
