Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid (BHA). It is widely used for clogged pores, blackheads and everyday congestion in acne-prone skin.

How it works

It exfoliates inside the pore lining and on the skin surface, which may help with blackheads, whiteheads and general congestion. It is less focused on killing bacteria than benzoyl peroxide.

Typical strengths: Leave-on products often use 0.5–2%. Cleansers may list a similar range on pack.

How people use it

  • In leave-on serums or solutions (often around 0.5–2%)
  • In gel or cream cleansers for a short contact rinse
  • A few times per week at first, then daily if tolerated
  • Sometimes on the body for back or chest breakouts

  • Very dry or barrier-damaged skin without a moisturiser
  • Deep, painful cystic acne as the only treatment

  • Use SPF in the day when using acids regularly
